2023's Titanium Top Picks by Alfa Ferro Alloys December 29, 2023

As the year draws to a close, we're eager to share a list of titanium-made objects that debuted in 2023 and undoubtedly deserve attention.

1. iPhone

Apple's latest move is certainly one to take note of. The iPhone 10 Pro and Pro Max, now encased in grade 5 titanium, are quite a robust piece of progress. While we wouldn't advise testing it as a car window smasher in any case, it's certainly reassuring to know it could handle extreme shock loads.

2. Ferro-titanium meteor

The meteor streaked through the Earth's atmosphere plunging into the Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea a decade ago. This summer, it was retrieved and studied by Harvard scientist Avi Loeb, the head of the Galileo Project. This celestial visitor, composed of beryllium, lanthanum, and uranium, unequivocally confirms in itself its origin from outside the solar system. Yet, what really steals the show are the microscopic metal spherules found within, perfect marbles measuring less than a millimeter in diameter each, made up of iron enriched with silicon, magnesium, and yes, titanium.

3. Titanium Hand-Prosthetic Attachment

A new titanium implant offers a stable and natural connection for artificial limbs, designed to be screwed directly into the residual bone of the wearer. It’s used with neuromuscular connected implants and has been hailed as an 'absolute breakthrough in bionics' by surgeons, as it promises to significantly enhance mobility and comfort for its users. Important side note: this year Amnovis, an additive manufacturing production and engineering company, introduced a master file for registering 3D printed titanium implants, marking a revolutionary step in medical technology. This development means that newly 3D-printed titanium bone can be approved more easily and swiftly, proactively addressing common FDA concerns, such as the spinal cage featured in picture. Looks like a significant advancement for both surgeons and grade one titanium producers.

4. SunFly: Titanium-Coated Wine Glasses

Japanese designers have unveiled a line of titanium-coated wine glasses. These remarkable pieces, perfected over three years, have successfully funded on Kickstarter. The creators say they stand out not just for their stunning look but also for their distinctive drinking sensation, 'mellowing the feeling of the drink through the action of active oxygen'. Nice to know that titanium can elevate even the most refined experiences.

5. Leica's Limited Edition Lens

In September 2023 Leica has introduced a special edition ‘Titan’ lens, boasting a troubleproof titanium exterior. This lens isn't just an urban photographer's dream for its durability. The batch is limited to 100 pieces worldwide and it's also a hot topic of debate due to its price tag – starting at EUR 16,200.
